Last year saw the art world reach a new peak in art fair saturation with the introduction of two major fairs in Asia, ART SG in Singapore and Tokyo Gendai in Yokohama. 2024 promises to be just as packed, with Frieze increasingly integrating its new acquisitions—the Armory Show and EXPO Chicago—into its overall strategy.

ART SG, Singapore
Returning for its second edition in early January, ART SG was 2024’s first art fair. Staged at the iconic Marina Bay Sands, ART SG, now part of the Art Assembly portfolio, brought together more than 114 exhibitors. While certain blue-chip enterprises like Pace, Perrotin, David Zwirner, and Almine Rech did not return, Lehmann Maupin, White Cube, and Thaddaeus Ropac all did report solid sales and dealers generally seemed enthusiastic about Singapore and the Asia-Pacific art market.

For its tenth edition, FOG brought together 45 leading galleries, including David Zwirner, Lehmann Maupin, Marianne Boesky, Jenkins Johnson, Jessica Silverman, and Anthony Meier, which relocated last year to nearby Mill Valley. In addition to the main fair, FOG brought together an entrance installation, a special FOG FOCUS section, and FOG Talks, all under the theme “A Love Letter to San Francisco.”

Another enterprise in the Art Assembly portfolio, the India Art Fair is the subcontinent’s largest art fair, though it is no longer its only major one, after the introduction of Art Mumbai last fall. This year’s edition was its biggest yet, with 100 exhibitors and a new emphasis on design, craft, and traditional arts. International exhibitors included Galleria Continua, Berlin gallery Neugerriemschneider, and Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

Zona Maco and Material, Mexico City
One of the most important fairs in Latin America, Zona Maco once again took over Centro Citibanbamex, combining its traditional contemporary art fair with ones for design, antiques, and photography. In the contemporary sector, exhibitors include Pace, Kasmin, and Sean Kelly, as well as local galleries Kurimanzutto, Proyectos Monclova, Labor, and OMR, among others. Material, a satellite fair to Zona Maco, returned for its tenth edition, with exhibitors like Chris Sharp Gallery, Embajada, Lodos, and Proxyco.

An sharp look at contemporary art scenes across Africa and its diaspora, 1-54 Marrakech returned for its first edition since last fall’s devastating earthquake. Among the smallest of the world’s art fairs, 1-54 Marrakech brought together a total of 27 exhibitors, including 14 from the African continent, eight of which are based in Morocco, twice as many as in 2023.

Frieze Los Angeles and Felix LA
For its fifth edition, Frieze LA will return for the second time to the Santa Monica Airport. The first of Frieze’s international fairs to take place each year, this iteration will bring together 95 galleries, including megas Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, David Zwirner, and Pace Gallery. The fair’s Focus section, for galleries in operation for 12 years or less, will be organized by Essence Harden, visual arts curator at the California African American Museum. For this edition, Frieze LA will reconfigure its floor plan and now include a central outdoor space that will be designed by WHY Architects. The fair will additionally not make use of the Barker Hanger, where a portion of exhibitors had been located last year. This edition of Frieze will also activate the athletic field and community park with performances and sculptures, respectively.
Satellite fair Felix LA will maintain its residence at the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt hotel and open a day earlier than Frieze to account for the distance between the two fairs. It’ll feature some 66 galleries, including local outfits Charlie James Gallery, Nicodim, Morán Morán, One Trick Pony, and Sebastian Gladstone.

Art Dubai
The largest art fair in the Middle East will stage its 17th edition this year, hosting more than 100 galleries from over 40 countries. First time exhibitors include Peres Projects, Gajah, and Voloshyn. Under the leadership of artistic director Pablo del Val, the fair has four sections: Contemporary, Art Dubai Modern, Bawwaba (meaning Gateway in Arabic) and the third edition of Art Dubai Digital. This year’s edition centers on expanding the idea of the Global South beyond “traditional geographic and economic boundaries” to explore shared histories and diasporic and migrant communities worldwide.

Outsider Art Fair, New York
For its 32nd edition, the Outsider Art Fair will bring together 63 exhibitors, with 9 participating for the first time. As with past editions, next year’s Outsider Art Fair will include two curated sections. Titled “Beat Art Work: Power of the Gaze,” the first is to be organized by legendary American poet Anne Waldman and will include visual art by poets like William Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Diane di Prima, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Joanne Kyger. The second curated section will celebrate the 50th anniversary of long-time exhibitor Creative Growth Art Center, the Oakland-based nonprofit that is the longest running organization of its kind, dedicated to supporting the work of artists with disabilities.

TEFAF Maastricht
The fair with the longest run of any listed here, TEFAF Maastricht will bring together more than 270 exhibitors, including 10 first-timers. Additionally, the fair will debut its Focus section, for galleries showcasing the work of a single artist or concept, and continue its Showcase section, for young and emerging dealers. The Art Business Conference will hold its 2024 edition in Maastricht on March 8 to coincide with the fair.

Art Basel Hong Kong
For its 2024 edition, Art Basel Hong Kong will return to its pre-pandemic size, bringing 242 exhibitors to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The 2023 edition, which saw the return of numerous international galleries and visitors, boasted 171 exhibitors; the 242 on deck for 2024 represents a 37 increase from the 2023 total figure. As with past editions, the fair is divided into three main sections: Galleries, the main portion of the fair representing some 200 exhibitors; Discoveries, for solo presentations of emerging artists; and Insights, for historical presentations on artists from the Asia-Pacific region.

Expo Chicago
For its 11th edition—its first held under the leadership of Frieze, which acquired the event alongside the Armory Show last year—Expo Chicago will host 170 galleries. Taking part in the fair are a number of Chicago galleries, including Document, Rhona Hoffman Gallery, and Corbett vs. Dempsey, as well as a good deal of blue-chip enterprises from beyond the city, among them Galeria Nara Roesler and Vielmetter Los Angeles. Perrotin, one of the biggest enterprises participating this time, has made its return to the fair after a hiatus, as have galleries like Mariane Ibrahim, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, and Harper’s.

The Dallas Art Fair has named the 91 exhibitors that will take part in its 16th edition, scheduled to run at the Fashion Industry Gallery. The exhibitor list includes several galleries with locations in Texas, including Erin Cluley Gallery + Projects (of Dallas), Martha’s (Austin), 12.26 (Dallas), McClain Gallery (Houston), Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino (Houston), and Pencil on Paper (Dallas), which is participating in the fair for the first time. Independent New York and TEFAF New York
The Independent art fair has named the 77 exhibitors that will participate in its upcoming New York edition at Spring Studios in Tribeca. As was the case last year, Independent will not align with Frieze New York, which is to be staged the week prior. The 2024 iteration of Independent marks its 15th anniversary, with its first edition held at the former Dia building in Chelsea in 2010 during Armory Week. The fair’s history will be honored in a special section, titled “15 x15: Independent 2010-2024” and organized by fair founder and CEO Elizabeth Dee and White Columns chief curator Matthew Higgs, who serves as founding curatorial adviser to Independent.
TEFAF New York, meanwhile, will host its tenth edition at the Park Avenue Armory, featuring close to 90 international galleries from 15 countries and four continents.

Frieze New York and NADA New York
Frieze New York has named the 68 exhibitors that will participate in its 2024 edition, scheduled to take place for the fourth time at the Shed. Spread across multiple levels of the multidisciplinary arts center in Hudson Yards, this year’s fair features one gallery fewer than last year’s, meaning that the fair remains boutique-sized following its move to its current location. This edition also represents the first since Frieze purchased the other main New York fair, the Armory Show, last summer. Accompanying the fair this year is NADA New York, which is organized by the New Art Dealers Association and will take place in nearby Chelsea.

Art Basel, Switzerland
The art world’s top fair, the Swiss edition of Art Basel, has announced a packed, city-wide program for its upcoming 2024 edition, with 287 galleries from 40 countries. Twenty-two of those galleries will be mounting booths at the fair for the first time. This year also marks the first time Art Basel will be fully under the direction of Maike Cruse, one of the first hires Noah Horowitz made after taking his place as the fair’s chief executive in 2022. Of the 287 galleries, 245 will make up the main section of the fair. Seven of these galleries previously contributed to the Feature or Statements sections, including Commonwealth and Council, Galerie Crèvecœur, Gaga, and Tina Kim Gallery.

Tokyo Gendai, Yokohama
Though much of the crowd that regularly attends art events takes the summer off after Art Basel ends, Art Assembly’s Japan fair takes place again in early July, Tokyo Gendai. Taking place at a convention center in nearby Yokohama, the fair, headed up by Eri Takane, will gather between 80 and 90 exhibitors. The fair’s second edition will be a major test for the Japanese art market’s continued longevity, especially as it compares to that of Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, and Hong Kong, the latter of which has long held eminence in Asia.

Frieze Seoul and KIAF
For its third edition, Frieze Seoul will once again align with local fair KIAF, with both opening on the same day, on different levels of the massive COEX convention center in the Korean capital. The fair, with ART SG in Singapore and Tokyo Gendai in their second outings, heads up a suddenly robust calendar for the Asian art market.

Armory Show and Independent 20th Century
The Armory Show will return for its fourth edition in the post–Labor Day slot at the Javits Center. While the exhibitor list is still forming, the 2023 edition featured 225 galleries, though it lacked any of the megas. Its Focus and Platform sections were a major hit last year, curated by Candice Hopkins and Eva Respini respectively, so all eyes will be on how they follow that up.
Running concurrently with the Armory Show is the third edition of Independent 20th Century, which focuses on art from that era with the aim of revising the canon.

Paris+, par Art Basel
After its highly successful second edition of Paris+ this past October, the fair will open at the Grand Palais as the undisputed main art fair in Paris. This time, however, the fair will come after the Palais’ reopening for the Summer Olympics, which will run from the end of July through August 11. To close out each year, the art world—and industries like fashion and entertainment—descend on Miami Beach in early December for a bevy of art fairs. The most important of these is Art Basel Miami Beach. This iteration will be the first under the direction of Bridget Finn, who joined as director of the Miami Beach fair in September 2023. The other two notable satellite fairs aligned with ABMB are Untitled Art, which sets up tents on the sand facing the Atlantic, and NADA Miami, which takes place in Miami proper.
